How Does the Subaru Boxer Engine Work?

2.4-Liter Direct-Injection SUBARU BOXER Engine

Subaru vehicles appeal to a wide range of drivers around Kelso and St Helens, and the Subaru Boxer engine is just one of the many reasons to put a new Subaru vehicle at the top of your list? What sets the Subaru Boxer engine apart from anything else on the market? Bud Clary Subaru explores this iconic powertrain option more in-depth below.

What is the Subaru Boxer Engine?

The Subaru Boxer engine is not one particular engine – it is a type, or classification, of engine. There are multiple Boxer engines within the new Subaru lineup, and you can choose from four-cylinder models and turbocharged options. There have even been six-cylinder Boxer engines. Here’s what makes the Subaru Boxer engine unique:

  • A horizontally-opposed (180-degree) orientation
  • A lower center of gravity than competing vertically-oriented engines
  • Better stability and control compared to similar in-class vehicles with standard engines
  • Less vibration than many comparable engines

Why are Subaru Engines Called Boxer Engines?

The Subaru Boxer engine is horizontally-transposed, so when the pistons in a Boxer engine fire, they move toward and away from each other concurrently in a horizontal motion. This motion is reminiscent of a boxer gearing up in the ring for a fight, which is how it earned the name.

Which Subaru Models Offer the Boxer Engine?

The Subaru Boxer engine is used throughout the entire lineup, so no matter which vehicle you select, you will be able to enjoy this iconic powertrain on the roads of St Helens and Woodland.

  • Subaru Forester
  • Subaru Outback
  • Subaru Ascent

Note: The all-electric Subaru Solterra does not feature the Subaru Boxer engine. It is outfitted with the StarDrive all-electric drivetrain.
